15 years of research in organic food systems in Denmark – effects on the sector and society Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, Ilse A.; Halberg, Niels.
The Danish government has funded research in organic agriculture and food systematically since the establishment in 1996 of the Danish Research Centre for Organic Farming (DARCOF, now ICROFS, International Centre for Research in Organic Food Systems). A recent analysis of the effects of the first 3 organic research programs (DARCOF I-III, 1996-2000) (Halberg et al. 2012) was carried out with the objective to determine not only the impact of the research on the sector from farmers and advisors to industry and retail but also on society from government and regulation to NGO’s.

A physiologically-based model of Cirsium arvense and Tussilago farfara growth and control Organic Eprints
Holst, Niels; Riemens, Marleen; Rasmussen, Ilse A..
Perennial herbs can be difficult to manage because of their underground storage organs which live sheltered from observation and control. In this paper, we describe the development of a population dynamics model for two perennial weeds, Cirsium arvense and Tussilago farfara. The model is physiologically based and includes plant growth and development, and mowing as a control option. Model performance was compared with field data from monospecific stands of C. arvense in Denmark and Netherlands and of T. farfara in Denmark. Finally, optimal mowing strategies were explored with the model.

Balance i ukrudtsbestanden Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, Ilse A.; Melander, Bo.

Cirsium arvense responses to stubble cultivation and catch crops in organic cropping systems Organic Eprints
Holst, Niels; Melander, Bo; Rasmussen, Ilse A.; Hansen, Preben Klarskov.
Field studies on perennial weeds, such as Cirsium arvense, are necessary to study the systemic effects of weed control. In this study we analyse the responses in above-ground C. arvense biomass and crop yield from results obtained in two organic field experiments, both combining stubble cultivation with post-harvest catch crops. A range of catch crops was investigated, varying in both species mixture and method of establishment, yet stubble cultivation was the only treatment found to reduce C. arvense density. The effect was even seen only in one year when a harsh winter acted synergistically with soil tillage. C. arvense exhibited density-dependent growth, in terms of above-ground biomass at harvest, with an estimated max. exponential growth rate of...

Computer model for simulating the long-term dynamics of annual weeds Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, Ilse A.; Holst, Niels.
A simulation model of the population dynamics of annual weeds and how it is affected by crop rotation, cultivation practices and weed control was presented by Rasmussen et al. (2002). The model aims to predict the development of a certain weed species in order to plan crop rotation and cultivation practices to minimise the risk of proliferation. The model does not predict the exact number of weeds expected to be found in a certain year or crop, but rather the general development over a number of years. It included the most important processes of the weed life cycle: seed survival in the soil, seed placement in soil after tillage, seed germination depending on soil depth, time of year and tillage and weed physiological development. The component describing...

Computer model for simulating the long-term dynamics of annual weeds: from seedlings to seeds Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, Ilse A.; Holst, Niels.
We developed a simple model to predict seed production from seedling density and estimated its six parameters for Chenopodium album and Papaver rhoeas from literature data, supplemented with field data on P. rhoeas seed production in Denmark. Parameter values were specified by their expected ranges rather than just point estimates, which enabled us to determine the expected ranges of seed production at given seedling densities. The model will be incorporated into a larger model framework presented earlier for a more complete description of annual weed seedbank dynamics in a crop rotation. We found the seed production (y) of P. rhoeas to be larger than reported earlier from UK; the relation to weed biomass (x) per m2 was curvilinear, y=6015∙x0.8153 seeds...

Crop production and N leaching in arable organic farming Organic Eprints
Olesen, Jørgen E.; Askegaard, Margrethe; Rasmussen, Ilse A..
The possibilities for increasing grain yields and reducing N leaching losses in organic ce-real production through manipulation of crop rotation design were investigated in a field experiment on different soil types in Denmark from 1997 to 2000. Three experimental fac-tors were included in the experiment in a factorial design: 1) proportion of grass-clover and pulses in the rotation, 2) catch crop (with and without), and 3) manure (with and with-out). Three four-course rotations were compared (Table 1). Two of the rotations had one year of grass-clover as a green manure crop, either followed by spring wheat or by winter wheat. The grass-clover was replaced by winter cereals in the third rotation. Animal ma-nure was applied as slurry in rates corresponding...

D4.1: Online Knowledge Platform Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, Ilse A.; Jensen, Allan Leck.
The OK-Net Arable project has launched a platform aimed at filling the gap in the exchange of information between farmers across Europe. Farmers’ needs were taken into account at every stage of development in order to make it easy for them to use. The platform is available in 10 languages (English, Bulgarian, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, French, German, Hungarian, Italian and Latvian) and the solutions are divided according to the most relevant topics in organic arable farming: Soil quality and fertility, nutrient management, pest and disease control, weed management and solutions for specific crops. Not only can farmers and advisors find solutions and engage with each other, they can also propose solutions. The intention is that this will help fill the...

Den langsigtede effekt af kløvergræsgrøngødning og efterafgrøder på udviklingen af kvik og tidsler Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, Ilse A.; Thomsen, Henning C.; Askegaard, Margrethe; Olesen, Jørgen E..
Kløvergræs opformerer kvik, men reducerer tidsler.

Direct control of perennial weeds between crops – implications for organic farming Organic Eprints
Melander, Bo; Rasmussen, Ilse A.; Holst, Niels; Hansen, Preben Klarskov.
Perennial weeds can be a major constraint to organic crop production in several North European 26 countries. Preventive and cultural control measures may not suffice when infestations with perennials 27 become severe. Direct control actions applied between crops can then be necessary to reduce the 28 problems. We conducted two experiments, one on a sandy loam and one on a sandy soil, respectively, in 29 Denmark, with the aim of studying the efficacy of different implement types and strategies. The 30 treatments were employed against mixed stands of perennials after harvest of spring barley in two 31 consecutive years. Time of treatment, cultivation depth and combinations of implements constituted the 32 strategies. Treatment effects were evaluated in the...

Effect of Elymus repens on yield of winter wheat, spring barley and faba bean in an organic crop rotation experiment Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, Ilse A.; Sønderskov, Mette; Damgaard, Christian; Kristensen, Kristian.
The impact of crop rotation, nutrient levels and use of catch crops on effect of E. repens on a sandy soil at Jyndevad on yield of winter wheat (2006), spring barley (2007-2008) and faba bean (2006-2008) was studied in an existing organic crop rotation experiment (Olesen et al., 2000; Rasmussen et al., 2006). Some of the objectives were to determine the yield loss at different levels of infestation of the weed, and to determine whether this relationship was influenced by the treatments. For all crops, the treatments had a high impact on the yield. The two treatments that had no manure applied for up to 12 years consistently had the lowest yields. In spring barley, the two treatments with manure and with catch crops consistently had the highest yields. In...

Elytrigia repens population dynamics under different management schemes in organic cropping systems on coarse sand Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, Ilse A.; Melander, Bo; Askegaard, Margrethe; Kristensen, Kristian; Olesen, Jørgen E..
Elytrigia repens is a rhizomatous perennial weed prevalent in organic cropping systems in Scandinavia. This study analysed the population dynamics of E. repens in a long-term crop rotation experiment on coarse sand in Denmark in order to gain insights into the factors influencing its population changes, especially those important for outbreaks of E. repens infestations. Data were obtained from three cycles of four-year crop rotations with various cash crops and annual grass-clover subjected to four treatment combinations: with and without animal manure and with and without catch crops. E. repens was controlled by different tillage and mowing strategies between and within crops. Pulses and spring cereals caused the highest population increases, especially...

Exchanging knowledge to improve organic arable farming: An evaluation of knowledge exchange tools with farmer groups across Europe Organic Eprints
Bliss, Katie; Padel, Susanne; Cullen, Beth; Ducottet, Charline; Mullender, Samantha; Rasmussen, Ilse A.; Moeskops, Bram.
Organic farming is knowledge intensive. To support farmers in improve yields and organic agriculture systems, there is a need to improve how knowledge is shared. There is an established culture of sharing ideas, successes and failures in farming. The internet and information technologies open-up new opportunities for knowledge exchange involving farmers, researchers, advisors and other practitioners. The OK-Net Arable brought together practitioners from regional Farmer Innovation Groups across Europe in a multi-actor project to explore how online knowledge exchange could be improved. Feedback from the groups was obtained for 36 'tools', defined as end-user materials, such as technical guides, videos on websites informing about practices in organic...
